Rock n’ roll will save your soul

28 Nov

I posted this on my Facebook, but since not everyone can read my Facebook, here it is:

I recently made a really great playlist on my iTunes & I wanted to share it with you. It’s not a lot of songs, but they are all so perfect, I don’t really feel like any other song could be added to make this playlist sound more complete than it already is.

“Beside You” – Van Morrison
+ Everything this man sings makes me feel alive.

“Cigarettes & Coffee” – Otis Redding
+ Pure intimacy.

“Girl From the North Country” – Bob Dylan
+ It makes me think of home & all of my lovely friends.

“Gimmie Shelter” – The Rolling Stones
+ Pure violence, with the most painfully beautiful female vocals from Merry Clayton.

“Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun” – Pink Floyd
+ I’m not a big Pink Floyd fan, but this song is really cool. I don’t know of a better word to describe it. If you want to know what being on drugs is like without actually being on drugs, turn off the lights, close your eyes, & listen to this song.

“Suzanne” – Leonard Cohen
+ Out of reach. . . .

“I Can’t Write Left Handed (live)” – Bill Withers
+ I remember my whole musical education & curiosity began when I was 14 & saw someone do a cover of this song at Satori Sound Records while I was living in Mobile.

“Whiter Shade of Pale” – Procol Harum
+ I always hear this song through my stomach. It feels like when you go down a small hill really quickly in a car.

“All Along the Watchtower” – Jimi Hendrix
+ Unless it’s live, I think my favorite time to listen to music is while walking around the city. This song just seems to make the world seem more real- it needs the streets. & besides, Dylan liked it.

“Dropout Boogie” – Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
+ There is a world where people shed tin tears & this song is at the top of the download charts. It is a much better place.

“Tell It Like It Is” – Aaron Neville
+ If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, this one would be very high on my list.

I advise all of you to get your hands on these songs & burn them onto a CD. $50 says you can’t help but feel good after the CD is done playing.
